Metal roofing is really taking off here in Round Rock!
At Longhorn Roofing, we’ve had the opportunity to help homeowners in Round Rock and all over the Austin area enjoy the great benefits of modern metal roofing. Metal roofs offer a slew of advantages shingle roofs can’t.
Here’s just a few of them:
With metal lasting about 30 years longer than shingle roofs, on average, it’s no surprise more people in Round Rock are opting for it. Over the last few months, though, we’ve received a puzzling question from many customers:
“Is standing seam metal roofing the same as metal shingle roofing?”
At Longhorn Roofing, we decided we would exclusively use standing seam roofing early on. Once you hear the differences, you’ll see why it’s the only metal roofing you’ll ever need.
Most people are used to old-fashioned asphalt shingle roofs, so it’s no surprise they would wonder what the story is with metal shingles. Let’s take a look at shingle versus standing seam.
Metal shingle roofs mimic the look and construction of conventional shingles. Unfortunately, they don’t have the iconic look of today’s metal roofs – but that’s only the beginning.
The biggest drawback of metal shingle roofs is that they are made of a thinner gauge metal than standing seam roof panels. Combine that with the fact that the individual shingles are much smaller, and you’re paying for a metal roof with many of the same problems as a shingle roof.
One thing people like about metal shingle roofs is that they’re faster and easier to install. Sadly, this means companies that don’t understand how metal roofs should work often offer them. Although they are inexpensive up front, you may end up having to replace the whole roof later on.
We’ll admit it: Standing seam metal roofing takes longer for us to install. We fabricate the individual panels right on site according to the shape of your roof so you’ll get the perfect fit.
It’s a little more work for us, but it usually gets done in a few days in Round Rock.
Standing seam metal roofing has panels that run vertically up the roof. This provides the striking look and the dramatic shadows associated with metal roofs. The raised interlocking seams mean there are no visible fasteners that can become warped or corroded and spring leaks.
With standing seam, it’s easier to use thicker, high-gauge Galvalume or Kynar 500 painted steel on the panels. This coated steel is remarkably strong and durable, protecting a home from the elements for decades. For our money (and yours!) it’s simply better than the alternatives.
If you’ve always had a shingle roof, it’s easy to underestimate how much money you could save if you decided to get a standing seam metal roof. Two major factors influence the amount of savings: the total dimensions of your roof and the color of a standing seam metal roof.
When we first introduced standing seam metal roofing in Round Rock, there was only one color available: the natural gray. And that still is an excellent color. But standing seam metal roofing panels can now be ordered in many different colors. This includes white, which enhances their reflective powers even more.
If a standing seam metal roof is designed, fabricated, and installed well, it’s not unusual for it to reflect 50% of the solar radiation that hits it. That’s the secret to it helping you stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Yes, it has a positive effect in all seasons since it makes the natural airflow in the home more efficient.
By reflecting excess solar heat and light, your HVAC system won’t need to work nearly as hard to reach and maintain your target temperature. No matter how warm or cool you like it, it’ll be much easier to do exactly what you want. In the height of summer, some customers have reported a 10%, 20%, or even 30% savings.
There’s no way for an Austin roofing contractor to estimate precisely how much you could save as a result of a standing seam metal roof. In a world where electricity is only getting more expensive, though, you’ll be one of the few homeowners who has a way to slow down those increased costs and save more money.
On top of that, you’ll spend less money on roof maintenance with a standing seam metal roof in Austin.
Standing seam metal roof maintenance is much simpler than shingle roof maintenance. You only need to get a metal roof inspection every other year, not once a year. Even the harshest weather rarely makes more than a superficial scratch on a standing seam metal roof, which does not usually require repair.
Finally, there’s the matter of replacing the roof. You’ll no longer need to be concerned about replacing your roof every 15 years, or so. Standing seam metal roofs can last for decades and are beloved by homeowners and by insurance companies.
