Is it time for Round Rock roof replacement?
If your roof is more than ten years old, it might be time.
Even though many shingle roof manufacturers claim their products can last for up to 30 years, that’s rarely the case here in Central Texas. The summer heat alone is enough to age a shingle roof before its time. That’s more true if there’s an underlying problem with the roof or the house itself.
Here are some factors that can contribute to needing an early roof replacement:
Poor Roof Ventilation
Most roofs need soffit vents in order to optimize the flow of air and make sure that hot air is escaping from the house the way it should. If the venting isn’t sufficient, then hot air will get caught up just under the roof, at the point where it should usually escape. In a hot day, that leads to the shingles baking from underneath.
Attic Used for Storage
There are some ways to safely use an attic for storage or even as a bedroom. However, this can’t be done here in Central Texas. In most cases, trying to use your attic for storage will impede the roof ventilation to the point where it will cause the same kinds of problems described above – your roof shingles will bake from the heat.
What exactly happens when roof shingles “bake?” They don’t actually look much different from the ground level. But they become soft, weak, and permeable. It’s very easy for water to slip inside a damaged shingle, penetrate it, and then end up welling on the waterproof underlayment below.
The underlayment is an important piece of weatherproofing that covers the entire under layer of the roof beneath the shingle layer. But it isn’t designed for water to well up and hold there indefinitely. Eventually, moisture will punch through. This can also happen when shingles are impacted by hail.
Before Round Rock Roof Replacement, Get a Roof Inspection in Round Rock
Sometimes, it’s obvious that your roof needs to be replaced. For example, you might be looking at several leaks after a major storm. Repairs can be performed for minor leaks, but structural damage to the roof beneath the shingle layer is something else entirely. You might need Round Rock roof replacement in that case.
Most of the time, though, it isn’t necessarily obvious when you need roof replacement in Round Rock.
A Round Rock roof inspection is a terrific way to know exactly what the situation is with your roof. With shingle roofing in Round Rock, we recommend a roof inspection every year before storm season. That way, you have a window of opportunity for any necessary roof repairs in Round Rock before the weather turns rough.
