The Basics of Roof Flashing Repair for Your Central Texas Roof

In Austin, flashing is usually made of aluminum or galvanized metal. This lets it stand up to plenty of wear and tear. However, it can end up with superficial damage – especially in storms with flying debris. Over time, it loses its shape, inviting leaks. Here are the steps that Longhorn Roofing follows when it comes to flashing repair for our customers' roofs.

There are three major types of flashing

Step Flashing

Protects the interface between a wall and a roof from leakage.

For step flashing, the goal is to put new flashing directly over damaged areas. To do this, we use shearers to snip a length of flashing, bend it to a 90-degree angle, then slide it up on the roof. Lastly, we adhere the flashing to the roof using flashing cement.

Vent Flashing

Supports small ventilation pipes that protrude from the roof.

Vent flashing repair starts with checking your pipe to ensure it’s not the source of your leak. If it is, the pipe needs to be replaced, or a larger collar installed. If the damage is severe, you might need to remove shingles to install new vent flashing.

Chimney Flashing

Ensures a watertight seal around the home’s chimney.

Chimney flashing is replaced just like step flashing for minor projects. We do this by cleaning out the damage zone with steel wool and using flashing cement to finish the job. We also check the mortar joint to make sure it isn't deteriorating.
